Exposure Monitoring for Formulators & Specialty Chemical Producers

Chemical manufacturing covers a wide range of operations — coatings, adhesives and resin production, plastics and polymer compounding, agricultural and industrial formulation, and batch or continuous specialty chemical processes. Each carries its own exposure profile, but VOCs and solvent vapors, isocyanates, formaldehyde, and acid/alkali mist are the recurring analytes across the sector. AGT Labs is the accredited industrial hygiene lab behind that monitoring, analyzing every sample in-house in Houston.

Chemical manufacturing happens in every state, and the standards don't change with the zip code. We serve plants anywhere in the United States — kits ship out, samples come back by prepaid return label, and analysis is identical wherever it was collected.

Chemical Manufacturing Analytes — OSHA vs ACGIH Limits

For several process analytes the OSHA limit and the health-based guideline are far apart. Both are shown, since most plants now set internal triggers against the lower number. These are federal limits and apply in every state.

Chemical Manufacturing IH Testing — FAQ

What IH testing do chemical manufacturers need?
It depends on the process, but the recurring analytes across formulators, batch producers and specialty chemical plants are VOCs and solvent vapors, isocyanates (OSHA 42/47) for polyurethane and coatings work, formaldehyde (NIOSH 2016/3500), acids and alkali mist, airborne metals, and respirable/total dust — all analyzed in-house under AIHA-LAP accreditation, compared against OSHA PELs and ACGIH TLVs.
Is this different from your refinery and petrochemical programs?
Yes. This page is built for chemical manufacturers, formulators and specialty/batch producers — coatings, adhesives, resins, plastics compounding and similar process operations. If you're a refinery or a large-scale petrochemical plant, see our dedicated Turnaround & Shutdown or Routine Refinery & Plant Compliance programs, which are built around benzene, H₂S and refinery-specific turnaround logistics.
Do you test isocyanates?
Yes. Isocyanates (MDI, TDI, HDI and related compounds) from polyurethane foam, coatings, adhesives and spray-applied products are analyzed by OSHA Method 42 (impinger) or OSHA Method 47 (dry sampling), depending on your process. Isocyanates are potent respiratory sensitizers, so sampling strategy and media selection matter — tell us your specific compound and application method before the kit ships.
Do you serve chemical plants outside Texas and Louisiana?
Yes — plants anywhere in the United States. Because every sample is analyzed at our Houston lab, a filter from a plant in Ohio, New Jersey or California is handled identically to one from the Gulf Coast. We ship a kit scoped to your process with a prepaid return label, and samples received before 2:00 PM CST are logged the same day. Courier pickup runs across the Houston, Louisiana and Gulf Coast corridor for local and regional clients.
Can you test formaldehyde and other reactive-chemistry exposures?
Yes. Formaldehyde is analyzed by NIOSH 2016 (impinger) or NIOSH 3500 (badge/passive), commonly needed for resin production, preservative use and reactive-chemistry processes. We also run acids and alkali mist by ion chromatography for scrubber, neutralization and cleaning operations.
Do older chemical plants need asbestos testing?
Often, yes. Legacy insulation, gaskets and transite panel in older chemical manufacturing facilities are common asbestos-containing materials. Bulk material analysis is performed under our NVLAP accreditation (101793-0, PLM only); PJLA covers both bulk PLM and air PCM clearance sampling for renovation or demolition work.
How fast is analysis and can you set up a standing account?
Standard turnaround is 5+ business days from log-in, with rush tiers down to 1 business day (+100%). Samples received before 2:00 PM CST are logged the same day. Plants with recurring monitoring run on a standing account with reserved capacity and a single point of contact.
Which analytes can you rush?
Most chemical-manufacturing analytes — VOCs, isocyanates, formaldehyde, metals and dust — are available on rush turnaround down to 1 business day. Legionella culture (if applicable to your site's water systems) cannot be rushed below its fixed ~10-day incubation. Call (713) 453-6090 to confirm rush availability for your analytes.
