What IH testing do pulp and paper mills need?
The recurring analytes are hydrogen sulfide and reactive sulfur gases from the kraft (sulfate) pulping process, chlorine dioxide and other bleaching agents, wood and fiber dust, welding fume and metals from maintenance work, asbestos in legacy mill insulation, and noise/heat stress — all analyzed in-house under AIHA-LAP accreditation.
Why is hydrogen sulfide such a concern at kraft mills?
The kraft pulping process releases hydrogen sulfide and other reduced sulfur compounds (the mill's characteristic odor), which are both a nuisance and, at elevated concentrations, a serious health hazard. We analyze H₂S and reactive sulfur gases by ion chromatography, the same method used across our refinery and oilfield programs for sour-gas monitoring.
Do you test chlorine dioxide and other bleaching chemicals?
Yes. Bleach plant operations use chlorine dioxide and related oxidizing agents that require dedicated sampling media. Tell us your bleaching sequence (ECF, TCF or elemental chlorine) so we scope the right method and media for your process.
Do you serve pulp and paper mills outside the Gulf Coast?
Yes — mills anywhere in the United States, including the Southeast, Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes pulp and paper regions. Because every sample is analyzed at our Houston lab, results are handled identically regardless of mill location. Kits ship with a prepaid return label, and samples received before 2:00 PM CST are logged the same day.
Do older mills need asbestos testing?
Often, yes. Boiler, digester and piping insulation at older pulp and paper mills frequently contains asbestos. Bulk material analysis is performed under our NVLAP accreditation (101793-0, PLM only); PJLA additionally covers PLM and PCM air-clearance sampling for maintenance, renovation or demolition work.
Do you test wood and fiber dust?
Yes. Total and respirable particulate from wood handling, chip processing, pulp drying and paper finishing operations is analyzed gravimetrically against OSHA's particulates-not-otherwise-regulated limits.
How fast is analysis and can you set up a standing account?
Standard turnaround is 5+ business days from log-in, with rush tiers down to 1 business day (+100%). Mills with recurring monitoring run on a standing account with reserved capacity and a single point of contact.
Do you test for combustible wood dust in pulp and paper mills?
Yes. Wood handling, chip processing and recovery boiler areas can generate combustible dust that falls under OSHA's Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program. We run particulate and dust characterization sampling alongside your routine IH monitoring so mills can document compliance in one submission.
Do you test for mold or air quality issues in pulp and paper mill buildings?
Yes. Wet process areas, warehouses and administrative buildings on mill sites can develop mold and air-quality issues separate from process-related IH monitoring. We run AIHA-EMLAP accredited mold and IAQ testing through the same lab and courier process as your industrial hygiene samples.
