How Home Mold Testing Works

Four steps from a suspect spot to an accredited lab report.

1. Request a kit

Request a sampling kit or use clear tape and a zip-top bag. Our instructions show you how in under five minutes.

2. Collect the sample

Press clear tape on the suspect spot, or swab a damp or textured surface. One area per sample, labeled with its location.

3. Drop off or ship

Bring it to 10200 East Freeway, Suite 101, Houston TX 77029, or ship it to the same address with a chain of custody form.

4. Get your report

Results are posted to your online results portal. Samples received before 2:00 PM CT are logged the same day.

What a Home Mold Test Can and Cannot Tell You

It can confirm mold

Whether a visible spot is mold, and which spore types are present — such as Stachybotrys or Aspergillus/Penicillium-like spores.

It cannot map the problem

A surface sample describes only the spot you sampled — not the air, and not what is behind the wall.

It does not replace an assessment

In Texas, mold assessments of 25 contiguous square feet or more generally require a TDLR-licensed mold assessor. Check the TDLR mold program for your situation.

When to Get Help

When to Call a Licensed Mold Assessor Instead

Call a licensed mold assessor if you see growth over a large area, have had a flood or sewage backup, have occupants with health concerns, or need documentation for insurance, a sale or a lease. Home Mold Testing — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test my home for mold myself?

Yes. For surface mold you can see, a tape-lift or swab sample collected by you and analyzed by an accredited lab confirms whether it is mold and which spore types are present. For larger affected areas, or if you need air testing, hire a TDLR-licensed mold assessor — they can send samples to AGT Labs.

Are hardware store mold test kits accurate?

Many store kits use settle plates that grow whatever lands on them, so nearly every home appears to "test positive". A tape-lift sample analyzed by an accredited lab shows what is actually on the surface.

Can I test for black mold myself?

Yes. A tape-lift or swab sample from the suspect spot will show whether Stachybotrys spores are present there. It cannot show how far growth extends behind walls or under flooring.

How many samples should I take?

One sample per suspect area is usually enough to confirm mold. Label each sample with its location.

Does AGT Labs come to my home?

No. AGT Labs is an independent laboratory — we analyze samples but do not inspect homes, collect samples on-site or perform remediation. You or your assessor collect the sample, and we analyze it at our Houston lab.

How long do results take?
