Routine Exposure Monitoring for Operating Plants

Operating refineries and petrochemical plants run continuous industrial hygiene programs — periodic personal sampling by similar exposure group, area monitoring at process units, respiratory-protection-program support, and the recordkeeping OSHA expects year-round. AGT Labs is the accredited lab behind that routine work, analyzing every sample in-house in Houston.

This is the day-to-day, compliance side of plant IH. When a scheduled shutdown compresses months of maintenance into days, that high-volume work is handled through our dedicated petrochemical turnaround air monitoring program — a distinct service built for outage-scale volume and speed.

Refining runs coast to coast, and so does the program. We support operating plants anywhere in the United States — kits ship out, media comes back by courier or prepaid return label, and multi-site operators get one lab and directly comparable numbers across every location.

  • Periodic benzene / BTEX personal monitoring by SEG

Where the Exposures Sit in an Operating Plant

Routine monitoring is easier to scope when it's mapped to the unit. This is how a plant-wide SEG program typically breaks down.

Refinery Analytes & OSHA Exposure Limits

The regulated limits your monitoring program is measured against, and the method our lab runs for each. Note that several refinery exposures are governed by ceiling limits rather than 8-hour averages. These are federal standards and apply at every plant in every state.

Client Support

Refinery & Petrochemical IH Testing — FAQ

What routine industrial hygiene testing do refineries need?
Refineries run periodic personal and area exposure monitoring for benzene and BTEX (NIOSH 1501 / OSHA 1028), hydrogen sulfide and reactive gases (ion chromatography), welding fume and metals (ICP-AES), hexavalent chromium (OSHA ID-215), respirable crystalline silica (XRD), asbestos (PLM/PCM), and noise and heat stress — supporting OSHA compliance, respiratory-protection programs, and SEG monitoring plans.
Is this different from turnaround air monitoring?
Yes. This covers routine, ongoing exposure monitoring at operating plants — periodic compliance sampling, SEG monitoring and program support. High-volume, time-compressed shutdown work is handled through our dedicated turnaround air monitoring program.
How fast is analysis and can you set up a standing account?
Samples received before 2:00 PM CST are logged the same day, with rush turnaround down to 1 business day. Turnaround is counted from log-in at the lab, so a plant outside our courier area should use overnight delivery to stay on the same schedule. Plants with recurring monitoring run on a standing account with reserved capacity, consistent reporting and a single point of contact.
Do you supply sampling media and pumps?
Yes. We ship pre-labeled sampling kits and sorbent media to plants anywhere in the U.S. and offer a calibrated pump loaner program for qualifying accounts, so plant HSE teams can sample on schedule and ship media back for same-day log-in.
Can you support plants outside Texas and the Gulf Coast?
Yes — operating plants anywhere in the United States. Refineries and petrochemical plants run in California, the Midwest, the Rockies, the Mid-Atlantic and the Pacific Northwest, and because every sample is analyzed at our Houston lab the work is identical wherever it was collected. We ship kits to site and receive media by courier or prepaid return label, and overnight delivery puts a distant plant on the same rush schedule as a Gulf Coast one. Our AIHA-LAP, NVLAP and PJLA accreditations are recognized nationwide, and the OSHA standards we report against are federal, so exposure analysis is valid wherever your plant is.
Do you test mercury and catalyst dust exposure at refineries?
Yes. Mercury vapor is analyzed by cold vapor atomic absorption (CVAA) for mercury removal units, gas processing and instrument maintenance where legacy elemental mercury is present. Catalyst handling, regeneration and spent-catalyst work are covered by gravimetric total and respirable dust analysis, with ICP-AES metals where the catalyst carries nickel, vanadium or molybdenum.
Do you also test refinery products?
Yes — separately from worker exposure. Our sister lab, AGT Petroleum Testing, handles product-side analysis of crude, fuels, aromatics and LPG/LNG under ASTM / ISO 17025.
Which plants do you cover across the Gulf Coast?
We run standing IH programs for plants across the Houston Ship Channel and the wider Gulf Coast — including Pasadena, Baytown, Beaumont & Port Arthur and Corpus Christi — with same-day courier pickup in the Houston area. Plants outside the courier zone are served by ship-in with a prepaid return label, on the same methods and the same rush options.
