What Is Industrial Air Quality Testing?

Air quality testing is the scientific analysis of indoor, workplace and ambient air samples to identify, quantify and document airborne contaminants — mold spores, asbestos fibers, respirable crystalline silica, total and respirable dust, volatile organic compounds and combustion gases. It is the foundation of every OSHA PEL exposure assessment, every post-remediation mold clearance, every AHERA asbestos clearance, and the only legally defensible way to answer the question "is this air safe to breathe?"

As Houston's accredited air quality testing lab, AGT Labs operates a full-capability suite in-house: X-ray diffraction for respirable silica, phase-contrast and transmission electron microscopy for asbestos, direct microscopy for mold spore traps, gravimetric analysis for dust, and GC-MS for EPA TO-15 VOC profiles. No shipping to a network lab, no chain-of-custody uncertainty, no week-long wait for subcontractor results.

Inhalable particulate fraction. Used in facility baseline studies, nuisance dust complaints and ventilation-effectiveness surveys.

VOC Profile (60+ compounds)

EPA TO-15 / OSHA PEL varies

Benzene (1 ppm PEL), toluene, xylenes, chlorinated solvents and aldehydes quantified in a single Summa canister analysis.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

OSHA PEL: 50 ppm / NIOSH REL 35 ppm

Combustion byproduct from forklifts, boilers, vehicle exhaust and fuel-fired equipment. Measured by direct-read and sorbent methods.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

ASHRAE 62.1: <1000 ppm IAQ

Key IAQ marker for ventilation adequacy. OSHA PEL 5000 ppm (8-hr TWA). NDIR direct-read instrumentation used.

Mold Spores

Indoor vs outdoor comparison

Aspergillus, Penicillium, Stachybotrys, Cladosporium and others identified to genus by direct microscopy from spore-trap cassettes.

Air Quality Testing — FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from Houston clients scoping an air quality project.

What is industrial air quality testing and why does it matter?
Air quality testing is the scientific quantification of airborne contaminants — mold, asbestos, silica, dust, VOCs and combustion gases — in indoor, workplace and ambient environments using validated sampling media and laboratory analysis on XRD, PCM/TEM, gravimetric balances, HPLC and GC-MS. It is the only legally defensible way to compare real-world exposures to OSHA PELs, AHERA clearance, ASHRAE 62.1 and EPA IAQ guidelines — and the foundation of every respirator-selection, engineering-control and medical-surveillance decision.
Which air quality test do I actually need?
It depends on the site. For concrete cutting, fracking and stone fabrication, respirable crystalline silica by NIOSH 7500. For demolition, renovation and abatement, asbestos by NIOSH 7400 PCM or NIOSH 7402 / AHERA TEM. For water-damaged buildings and post-remediation clearance, mold spore traps. For sick-building complaints in offices and schools, a full IAQ panel with CO₂, CO, PM, VOCs and formaldehyde. For fenceline and community monitoring, EPA TO-15 VOCs and combustion-gas panels. If you're unsure, call our lab team — we scope the right plan based on the site.
How fast can I get air quality results?
Standard turnaround at our Houston air quality testing lab is 3–5 days for most silica, dust, TEM asbestos and formaldehyde analyses. Rush 24-hour and same-day turnaround is available for PCM asbestos, mold spore traps and direct-read gas measurements. EPA TO-15 VOC profiles and culturable mold panels typically run 5–7 days due to instrument and incubation time required.
Is AGT Labs accredited for air quality analysis?
Yes — AGT Labs is AIHA LAP accredited for industrial hygiene analysis, NVLAP accredited for bulk and airborne asbestos, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited for environmental chemistry, and licensed by Texas DSHS. Every report carries the applicable accreditation stamp and is defensible for OSHA inspections, AHERA clearance, insurance claims and enforcement proceedings throughout Texas.
Can AGT Labs collect air samples on-site, or do I ship them in?
Both. Certified industrial hygienists from our Houston air quality testing lab are available throughout the Houston metro for on-site personal and area sampling, IAQ investigations, mold clearances, asbestos surveys and silica compliance monitoring. If you prefer to sample yourself, we provide free pre-weighed kits with cassettes, cyclones, calibrated pumps, chain-of-custody paperwork and return shipping labels.
What does an air quality test cost in Houston?
Pricing depends on the analyte, method, sample count and turnaround requested. PCM asbestos samples start around $25; NIOSH 7500 silica XRD runs $65–$85 per sample; mold spore traps typically $45–$65; full EPA TO-15 VOC profiles run $250–$400 per Summa canister. Request a quote for exact pricing — we typically respond within the same business day.
Do you provide defensible reports for OSHA enforcement and AHERA clearance?
Yes. Every air quality report from AGT Labs includes the published method citation, accreditation stamp, detection limits, chain-of-custody record, and PEL / AL / AHERA-clearance comparison. Our data has been used in OSHA silica and asbestos inspections, AHERA school clearance, insurance water-loss claims and litigation throughout Texas.
